researchers with honda, nasa, and caltech have announced a new breakthrough battery chemistry using a fuoride-ion within a liquid electrolyte.the most popular current lithium batteries may step aside for a new flouride-ion battery.
the lithium-ion carries a positive charge while fluoride is an anion – a negatively-charged ion – which means it has greater energy density but which means that they may last longer – up to eight times longer than batteries in use today. at this writing the fluride-ion will travel within a new electrolyte liquid is known as bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether (btfe).
